PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive control method for carriage and an ink jet printer in which a carriage can be moved surely to a cap position even when the location of a cap unit is shifted from a reference operation point. SOLUTION: The ink jet printer comprises a platen, a carriage, an ink jet head, a cap unit, a carriage motor 6, and a control means 31. The control means 31 comprises means 37 prestored with the driving amount of the carriage motor 6 required for moving the carriage at least from a reference operation point to a cap position where the ink jet head faces the cap unit. Moving amount of the carriage is controlled based on the driving amount stored in the memory means 37 when the carriage 4 is moved to the cap position.
