PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for manufacturing a hydrogen storage alloy excellent in cost performance and also to provide a magnesium recovering method, capable of safely and efficiently recovering magnesium produced from molten metal. SOLUTION: A raw material for hydrogen storage alloy, which contains misch metal material containing 0.01-2 wt.% magnesium as an impurity, is melted to manufacture the hydrogen storage alloy. At this time, a fine magnesium powder, which is formed out of magnesium vapor generated from molten metal, is recovered while being slowly oxidized. The recovered magnesium having oxide film on the surface is put into an aqueous solution of dilute ferric chloride under inert-gas atmosphere and formed into magnesium hydroxide.
