PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the axial, vertical and sheave-radial dimensions by providing a cylindrical sheave having a plurality of permanent magnets circumferentially provided on the inside part in a prescribed arrangement and a cantilever hollow shaft inserted to the sheave, and circumferentially providing an armature in the position opposed to the permanent magnets on the circumferential part of the cantilever hollow shaft. SOLUTION: A gearless hoist for hoisting an elevator comprises a sheave 1 having a plurality of permanent magnets 2 circumferentially provided on the inside part in a prescribed arrangement, and a cantilever hollow shaft 4 cantilevered from one side through a cantilever support mount shaft 5 by a cantilever frame 6, and an armature 3 is circumferentially provided in the position opposed to the permanent magnet 2 on the circumferential part of the cantilever hollow shaft 4. According to this, the axial, vertical and sheave 1-radial dimensions are shortened to minimize the machine room of the elevator. This hoist generates a rotating magnetic field by carrying current to the armature 3, rotates the sheave 1 by the interaction between this rotating magnetic field and the permanent magnets 2, and hoists a cable to raise the elevator.
