摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject material capable of displaying a gradation, having a small spontaneous polarization and capable of realizing high image quality by making the dielectric anisotropy negative and enabling a specific continuous gradation. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal material has a negative dielectric anisotropy and is capable of providing a continuous gradation so as to be stabilized at a prescribed gradation by increasing or decreasing an electric field for changing the liquid crystal orientation by a reverse electric field which is an electric field prepared by surface polarized charges at a surface density of±Ps formed by the rotation of polarization in an element. The material preferably has <=20.76 [nC/cm2] value of spontaneous polarization represented by the formula (Ps is the value of the spontaneous polarization;εIc is the relative permittivity of the liquid crystal; dIc is the cell gap;εsc is the relative permittivity of a dielectric in a storage capacitor; dsc is the thickness of the dielectric in the storage capacitor; k is the ratio of the area of the electrode of the storage capacitor to the pixel area). Since the dielectric anisotropy is negative, effects on prevention of lowering of driving voltage and the disorder of voltage and permeability characteristics are obtained. Since the value of the spontaneous polarization is small, a display method without requiring reset driving or computation between frames is obtained.
