PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modify a melamine derivative useful as an intermediate for fine chemicals such as agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyes and coating materials by heating and reacting a melamine (derivative) with an alcohol in the presence of a metallic catalyst under specific condition. SOLUTION: (A) An (N-substituted)melamine (derivative) of preferably formula (R1 to R6 are each H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like) (e.g. melamine) is made to react with (B) an alcohol (e.g. 1,4-butanediol) under heating in the presence of (C) a mixed catalyst composed of (i) a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. Pd-C) and (ii) a dehydrogenation catalyst (e.g. Ni-NiO-SiO2) in the absence of hydrogen gas to introduce a substituent (e.g. methyl group) into the component A. Preferably, the amount of the component B is 0.01-500 times mol and that of the component C is 0.00001-200 mol% each based on the component A and the reaction time is 0.1-100 hr.
