PURPOSE: An intellectual semiconductor memory is provided to positively input and output data, by enabling the user to compress and store data using a determined algorithm according to the user's request, and by enabling the user to freely adjust an input/output speed. CONSTITUTION: A command controller(20) inputs a register address and a command. In addition, the command controller(20) sets an input/output command and a companding command as an operation mode. An input/output buffer(30) inputs and outputs an address, data, a reading signal and a writing signal. An algorithm execution device(40) operates compression and an expansion algorithm set according to the input/output command and the companding command. In addition, the algorithm execution device(40) records or reads data according to the address, the reading signal and the writing signal. A main memory cell(50) stores data under the control of the algorithm execution device(40). The command controller(20) includes a command register(22) which inputs a register address and a command, an input/output control register(24) which sets an input/output mode, a function mode and an input/output speed and a companding control register(26) which sets a companding mode and an algorithm selection number. The algorithm execution device(40) includes an algorithm memory(44) which is equipped with an operation system and so on and a CPU(42) which executes one algorithm according to an operation mode set up.
