摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control attenuated quantity of light without precisely controlling voltage. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical attenuator A is equipped with a polarizing and separating means 2 to separate the incident light from the outside into P-polarized light and S-polarized light, a liquid crystal element 50 where both of the P-polarized light and S-polarized light separated by the polarizing separating means 2 enter, and a multiplexing means 3 for polarized light where the P-polarized light and S-polarized light passing through the liquid crystal element 50 enter and are multiplexed to exit to the outside. The liquid crystal element 50 consists of two 45 deg. twist nematic liquid crystal cells 4, 5 laminated and the voltage to be applied on each of the 45 deg. twist nematic liquid crystal cell 4, 5 can be independently varied from each other. Thus, a loose attenuation curve can be obtained.
