PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paint film damaged position detecting method and a device of a buried coated steel, capable of stable and high-sensitive signal detection by suppressing the influence of a frequency low band limit at the time of signal propagation. SOLUTION: A signal of an M-series signal generator 10 is amplified by a power amplifier 3 and applied on the interval between a buried steel 1 and an installed electrode. A survey instrument 6 is run on the ground surface along the longitudinal direction of the buried steel 1, and a potential difference between wheel electrodes 6a, 6b is detected. A reference signal having the same pattern as a signal to which a frequency band limit equal to that which the signal of the M-series signal generator 10 receives on its propagation route is given is outputted from a reference signal generator 11'. Mutual correlation between the potential difference between the wheel electrodes 6a, 6b and the reference signal is operated by a correlation processing part, and its peak value is adopted as a representative value of the potential difference, and operation processing is executed by using the representative value. Hereby, an S/N ratio is greatly improved.
