PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication unit where an image to be transmitted is changed into a transmission (transfer) image or a display image on a communication opposite party, depending on an operating state (a state of use). SOLUTION: When a PHS section 203 receives data, processing is branched depending on the operating mode. In the case of a telephone mode, since the communication unit has only a telephone transmission reception function, the unit transmits an image denoting 'image transfer in preparation' that is able to find out prepared in advance in a flash memory 213. Thus, a destination unit is able to find out the state of a terminal on a sender side. In the case of a camera mode, whether a photographing image or a photographed image can be sent is discriminated. When setting is made to permit transmission of the image, the image that is being photographed or has been photographed is transmitted (S608).
