A fireproof material has fibrous insulating layer(s) and fireproof layer(s). Some or all of the fireproof layer(s) are mineral wool and co-operate with the insulating layers to improve the overall thermal insulation of the material. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) a fireproof element includes the above material enclosed in a polymer layer; (b) use of (a) to insulate an aircraft fuselage; (c) manufacture of the above material by assembling the separate layers; (d) apparatus for manufacturing the material as in (c) and including devices delivering the layers, a container of binder, a device guiding the layer(s) across the container and a device compressing the layers together, and a device for evaporating solvent and/or polymerizing the binder in the layers. Preferred Features: The material is 5 - 30 wt % of fireproof material. The fireproof mineral fibres are /- 10 cm long and 10 microns in diameter
