PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make switcheable the device numbers without removing a device regardless of its mounting position. SOLUTION: A signal which is set at a mechanical switch 23 is inputted to a setting circuit 24, and a receiving circuit 21 receives a device number signal 3 outputted from a host system 1 and outputs it to the circuit 24 via a control circuit 22. When the signal 3 shows 'device number external input', the circuit 22 outputs a device number based on the signal 3. If the signal 3 shows 'mecahnical switch 23 setting prority', the circuit 22 ignores the device number based on the signal 3 that is outputted from the system 1 and controls the circuit 24 to output the device number signal corresponding to the device number signal set by the switch 23. Thus, the device number of an IDE primary circuit 25 is set.
