摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a substrate for a magnetic recording medium having a smooth surface, large stiffness, low light transmittance with a small amount of carbon black and low surface electric resistance and a magnetic recording medium utilizing the substrate. SOLUTION: This substrate for a magnetic recording medium having a non- magnetic ground layer consists of a non-magnetic supporting body and a non- magnetic ground layer including non-magnetic particle powder and a bonding resin which are formed on the non-magnetic supporting body. And, the non- magnetic particle powder is an iron based black acicular complex particle powder having a 0.021-0.35μm average major axis and consisting of acicular hematite particle powder or acicular iron oxide hydrate particle powder the surface of which is coated with fluorine containing organosilane formed from fluoroalkylsilane, at least a part of which carbon black is adhered to. The quantity of the carbon black adhered is 1-20 pts.wt. to the 100 pts.wt. acicular hematite or iron oxide hydrate particle powder.
