PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a belt fixing unit capable of performing a stable fixing operation. SOLUTION: The unit has a pressure roller 120 which is brought into pressure contact with a fixing belt to be heated 110 and fixes a toner image onto a recording material by passing the recording material S, one end being driven and the other end following it, with a toner image formed thereon through the center part N1 of a pressure contact part N, thereby fusing a toner image under heat. The fixing belt comprises a surface layer 113, made of a highly releasable material, which covers at least the surface of the widthwise center of a belt substrate 112 made of a netlike body or cloth shorter than the circumferential length of the pressure contact part, and on both ends of the belt, the exposed portions 112b of the belt substrate are formed. An oil application means 150 is provided. Among threads forming the netlike body, at least a thread extending in the direction of the width of the belt is composed as an assembly body consisting of a plurality of fine threads. The highly releasable material forming the surface layer is a releasing-oil permeable material.
