PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens system which is suitable for a video camera or the like using a solid-state imaging device or the like, whose lens groups are simply constituted, whose assembly is easily adjusted and which can be made inexpensive. SOLUTION: This lens system is provided with a 1st lens group G1 having negative refractive power, a 2nd lens group G2 having positive refractive power and a 3rd lens group G3 having the positive refractive power in turn from an object side. The group G1 is constituted of only one negatively joined lens component and the group G2 is constituted of two or more positive lens components and one or more negative lens components. Besides, the group G3 is constituted of a single lens element. Then, when variable power is executed to a telephone end state from a wide angle end state, an interval between the groups G1 and G2 is narrowed and the interval between the groups G2 and G3 is widened.
