PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct the luminance and the contour of a video signal in an animation while not correcting a still image by easily detecting the range of the animation of the video signal without using a motion detecting circuit. SOLUTION: A detecting signal for detecting an animation (a setup signal, for example) is previously added to only the animation among the video signal. In a video signal correcting circuit CT1, a setup signal detecting circuit 2 detects the setup signal in the video signal S1 and outputs it to a discriminating and correcting quantity deciding circuit 4 which receives setup signal information S2, discriminates the existence of the setup signal and decides the correcting quantity. A luminance correcting circuit 5 which receives discriminating and correcting quantity information S4 corrects the luminance of the video signal S1 which is temporarily stored in a frame buffer 3, a contour correcting circuit 6 which receives the information S4 corrects the contour of the video signal S5 after luminance correction and outputs the video signal S6 after luminance and contour correction.
