PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence or absence of an original on an original platen without installing a special sensor for detecting the original. SOLUTION: An image reader is provide with an original platen 104 where an original 302 from which an image is read is placed and an original unit 105 reading the image of the original 302 placed on the original platen 104. The optical unit 105 scans the original platen 104 and therefore, the presence or absence of the original on the original platen 104 is detected.
