PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an internal latent image type direct positive silver halide emulsion having high sensitivity and giving high contrast to a low density part on its reversal characteristic curve and to obtain a color diffusion transfer photosensitive material using the silver halide emulsion. SOLUTION: This direct positive silver halide emulsion contains core/shell type silver halide grains having >=0.3μm average grain diameter and an average diameter to thickness ratio of >=2 and including >=50% by area of flat platy grains having a diameter to thickness ratio of 2-100. The core/shell type silver halide grains contain an ion of at least one metal selected from the group comprising Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Bi, Re, the group VIII metals of the Periodic Table and the lanthanides in the core part and at least one metallic complex of the formula [Fe(CN)6-aLa]n in the shell part. In the formula, (a) is 0, 1 or 2, L is a ligand other than CN and (n) is 3 or 4.
