A folding cylinder of a folding apparatus has folding components (20) accommodated on its periphery which can be operated according to phase. The cylinder segments (12-30) incorporating the folding components are adjustable relative to one another and supported coaxially in side walls (28,29). Each of the folding components can be driven with a separate drive (1) that is supplied via a rotary lead-through (4,26) and can be controlled by a speed controller (2) according to speed. To each of the separate drives is assigned a speed controller. A speed controller common to all separate drives is accommodated outside the folding cylinder.
