PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a color display device whose utilization efficiency of light is excellent, whose luminance is high and by which excellent display quality without having color unevenness or the like is obtained even by using an inexpensive electric discharge light emission type lamp and which is suitable for miniaturization. SOLUTION: A projector 100 as this device is provided with a light source device 14 generating converged light, a diffraction grating 20 on which the converged light from the light source 14 is made incident and by which incident light is spectrally split in accordance with a wavelength, a microlens array 24 at which plural lens elements to which diffracted light from the diffraction grating 20 is made incident and is condensed at plural specified areas per the light of a specified wavelength component are arranged and a light valve 26 to modulate the light condensed at a specified area by the microlens array 24. Then, the grating of the diffraction grating 20 is made into a linear shape, or is arranged so that the normal of the diffraction grating 20 is inclined to the optical axis of a luminous flux made incident on the light valve 26. |
