The sharpener has a pencil guide (14) and a blade (15) forming a modular one-piece component of cutting material, pref. ceramic cutting or hard metal. Several sharpeners with different cutting angles and/or for pencils of different thickness, may be connected to each other to form pref. a one-part component. A container for shavings is fastened to or integral with, the sharpener. The sharpener has a depth stop or setting screw to determine the length of the sharpened lead.
