A communication system (1) such as an ATM-PON comprises a station device (2) which has a multicasting message generating unit (2A) and a group designating message generating unit (2B) and subscriber devices (4-1 to 4-N: N is an integer) each of which has a multicasting message processing unit (4A) and a status control unit (4B). The station device (2) designates subscriber devices (4-i: i=1 to N) by means of a group designating message as a group of devices to receive a multicasting message. Only the designated subscriber devices (4-i) are so controlled as to be able to receive and process the multicasting message. Thus, only specific device group can receive a multicasting message, and as a result, any unexpected error operation of the subscriber device (4-i) can be prevented by the transmission of a full multicasting message containing information inherent to a vender, thereby providing information for a specific device group in an extremely short time.
