An adhesive system, for bonding polystyrene foam to a surface, comprises a barrier layer (4) comprising 70-90 % water, 0.5-1 % polysaccharide and 10-20 % starch and an adhesive (5) comprising 20-40 % tylose solution, 0.5-10% of an ethylene containing dispersion, 45-65 % chalk (5 mu m and 5-15% chalk (3 mu m). An Independent claim is included for a process for the bonding of polystyrene foam to a surface by application of a water soluble barrier layer to the surface, drying and adhering the foam to the barrier layer by means of a polystyrene adhesive.
