The milling tool (25) is cyclically moved away from the surface of the workpiece to be machined, along a movement path in a machining direction. The tool is moved along a first advancing distance (p1) in the machining direction, so that it machines the surface of the workpiece. After a time t as elapsed, the tool is then moved by a distance (p2) in an opposite direction so that it is no longer in contact with the surface of the workpiece, where p1 is larger than p2.
