Benzimidazole compounds of general formula (I) or salts thereof, exhibiting an inhibitory activity against the conversion of macrophages into foam cells an d being useful as the active ingredient of orally administrable preventive and therapeutic agents for arteriosclerosis or hyperlipidemia: wherein R1 is one or more substituents on the benzene ring which are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogeno, lower alkyl, and lower alkoxy; R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, or acyl; L is C4-C8 alkylene or an ethylene-oxy connecting group represented by the general formula: (CH2CH2O)nCH2CH2(wherein n is 1 or 2); X is O or NH; Y is S or a single bond; and Q is a five- or six-membered heterocyclic group which may have a substituent on the ring.
