A device for personal protection against a body attack, for example conducted with guns, is described. With its help, the attacker can be exposed at least to one electric shock of high voltage and low current density and thereby be made unable to fight. It has an electrical current source, functional elements for the conversion of the current supplied by the current source, contact electrodes for introducing the current into the body of the attacker and associated switching and control devices. The contact electrodes (13) are provided in a mat (14) or similar made out of insulating material. The contact electrodes form in the surface of the mat, a number of double contacts with which the current can be transmitted to the body of the attacker. The contact electrodes in the mat are clad so that their presence including the electrical connecting leads is hidden from the eye. The mat is provided spatially so that an attacker comes forcibly into body contact with it and loads it with at least a part of his body weight.
