There is a hollow part with an inside diameter smaller than the sleeve. There is an elongated electrode (2) which is inserted into the hollow part of the transparent discharge vessel, with a small gap to the inside wall of the hollow part remaining, and with a front end of the electrode projecting into the sleeve of the transparent discharge vessel. A connecting conductor (3) has a front end connected with the rear end of the electrode, in which the middle section is fastened to the transparent discharge vessel and the rear end projects out of the transparent discharge vessel. There is a discharge medium that contains at least neon and argon. A ballast apparatus has a loading characteristic with a smooth transition from the secondary no-load voltage to the secondary short-circuit current. and with which one can run the high pressure discharge lamp at high frequency.
