Thermo-plastics material is extruded from a spinneret (10) such that filaments (12) pass around a bar (14) and then downwardly over the surfaces of a heated bar (16) and a cooling bar (18). As the filaments pass the heated bar (16) they contact that bar and the point in contact together with the portion of that side of the filaments undergoes a rapid temperature rise of a short duration to induce a temperature gradient across the filament which may possibly melt part of each filament or render part of the cross-section soft or plastics. As the filaments are under tension the tension is at least partially relieved from one portion of the filament. The filament is then pulled and it relaxes to set the relaxation into the filament. The filaments then pass through a steam oven before being optionally crimped and then cut. When cut the part of the filaments that were not heated at the bar (16) contract to induce a curl into the fibres.
|
