A system to heat body portions using controlled microwave energy has a support unit to support a subject body portion and a microwave power assembly arranged to be variably positionable relative to the support unit. The microwave power assembly comprises a plurality of microwave power supply devices, each one being capable of irradiating a focused directional beam of microwave frequency energy at a controllable power level. A central processor unit controls the position of the microwave power assembly, as well as at least one of the power level, beam focus and beam direction of the beams of microwave frequency energy irradiated by the microwave power supply devices.
