A drive unit (8) is provided for producing a relative movement between a piston rod head (5) and an acquisition device (7), and a measuring device is provided for determining the path between the piston rod head and the acquisition device. The pipetting/dosing system (1) has a pipetting/dosing device (2); a detachable piston-cylinder unit (3) with a piston and a piston rod head (5) having a code specifying the type of piston-cylinder unit; and an acquisition device (7) for automatically identifying the type of piston-cylinder unit connected to the system. A drive unit (8) is provided for producing a relative movement between a piston rod head (5) and an acquisition device (7), and a measuring device for determining the path between the piston rod head and the acquisition device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a process for recognizing the type of piston-cylinder unit for a pipetting/dosing system; and (b) an exchangeable piston-cylinder unit for a pipetting/dosing system.
