The method involves coupling light into a light conductor (21) laid along a section of the track (1) and coupling it out after passing along the track section, generating a current data set (D) from the output light and deriving track state information (I) from the data set. The light coupled into the conductor is polarised. The polarisation state (P) of the light coupled out is determined and included in the data set.
