The device incorporates a selector lever (10) moveable between parking (P), neutral (N), and drive positions (D). A locking pin (146) is held moveable on the selector lever to engage with contact openings (141,142). A locking/release device (120) locks the selector lever in selected position, when a brake pedal (32) is not depressed, but releases the locking pin from one of the openings, when the brake pedal is depressed. The locking/release device incorporates a release lever (124) of elastic material.
