A procedure for controlling the gear change in an auto gearbox, especially of cars with IC engines, has the following steps. The output torque of the gearbox is determined. A prognosis of the maximum expected torque is generated. A minimum torque reserve is determined. A torque reserve is calculated for each gear stage. For each gear stage the torque difference between the torque reserve and the minimum torque reserve is calculated. There is shifting into a lower gear stage when the maximum expected torque is greater than the torque attainable at full-load in the gear stage chosen. Alternatively, there is shifting into the highest gear stage where the torque differences are positive or zero.
