Anhydrous compositions from alkylpolyglycosides and alkoxylated fatty alcohols

A composition (A) comprises: (a) at least one substituted alkyl glycoside compound of formula (Z)y-(G)x-O-Ra (I); (b) at least one (poly)alkylene glycol diether compound of formula ZO-ÄCH2CH(R1)OÜn-Rb (II); (c) optionally one or more alkyl glycoside compounds of formula GxORa (III); and (d) optionally one or more (poly)alkylene glycol monoether compounds of formula HO-ÄCH2CH(R1)OÜn-Rb (IV). The ratios by weight (I):(II), (III):(I) and (IV):(II) are 0.1-10, 0-1 and 0-1 respectively. Z = CH(Me)OR2 or CH2CH(OH)R3; R2 = 1-30C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; R3 = 1-4C alkyl; 0 < y ≤ 3x+1; x = 1-5; n = 1-30; R1 = H or Me; G = saccharide residue; Ra, Rb = 1-30C hydrocarbyl. Claimed preparation of (I) involves: mixing a sugar H-G-OH with an excess of at least one alcohol HORa (V) in an acidic medium to form a mixture (B) of (III) and the excess (V); adding (V) in a ratio by weight (IV):(V) of 0.1-10 to give a mixture (C); neutralising and distilling to eliminate the excess (V) and produce an anhydrous composition (D) containing (III) and (IV); and reacting (D) with ZA to produce (A). Composition (D) is also claimed.
