With automatic gears the gear ratio is automatically adjusted to match the speed called for by the driver operated accelerator. If the driver selects a gear manually after depressing the accelerator to increase speed it is compared with the current gear ratio. If these deviate an upper ratio limit is set appropriate to the highest gear ratio for the ratio set by the driver
