A system for providing electrical stimulation to the trigeminal nerve 22 comprises a lead 1,2 and electrodes 3. The electrode assembly 3 features a pair of oppositely disposed curved semi-circular cuffs 4, 5 disposed to conform a lumen 6 therethrough. The ends of each cuff are mounted into a resilient hinge (7, Fig 4) disposed upon the distal end of a lead body 9 through which a lead 1,2 passes. The hinge biases the cuffs towards one another such that the nerve 22 will remain enclosed therein. The hinge is further designed so as to be easily opened so as to spread the cuffs apart. Hinge opening may be accomplished through a specialized implant tool 9, the implant tool being a generally cylindrical tube designed to meet about the lead body. A divergence 98, Fig 4) near the hinge permits the implant tool to engage the lead body in that section and thus forces the cuffs apart by compressing members (11,12 Fig 4) behind the hinge (7 Fig 4 and Fig 5). Alternatively, grip portions on the outside of each cuff may be used to open the Lumen (see Figs.1,2A). |
