Radio apparatus and a method of operation are disclosed for a radio communications system. The radio apparatus includes a directional beam antenna, for example a phased array antenna and control circuitry. The radio apparatus is operable in two modes, a first mode to determine the beam direction for optimum signal quality, and in a second mode to update the beam direction for maintaining optimum signal quality.
