In the present invention there is disclosed a method of controlling thread feed in flat hosiery frames and knitting machines at abrupt fluctuation of thread consumption during which a sensor (22) detecting thread tightening, generates a signal of thread tightening characteristic and said signal is then applied to a controller, which controls a driving device according to the thread tightening value. The invented method is characterized in that at least one another signal is processed simultaneously in addition to or instead of the thread tightening signal in the controller and this second signal contains information of the future consumption of thread. The apparatus for making the method is provided with a thread wheel (13) that is arranged in a yarn path, further a driving device, a thread (6) tightening sensor (22) and a controller by means of which it is possible to control the driving device according to the actual value of the thread tightening. The controller consists of a control device (15) and a processor (16). It reacts in advance by continuous feeding or stoppage of the thread (6) feed before abrupt changes of the thread (6) demand. The controller can operate as a state controller or as a control unit. The controller can be further connected to a detecting device (24) for detecting movement of slides (9) forming a drive of a thread guide (7) for feeding the thread (6) to latch needles (5).
