PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which wasteful consumption of an ink ribbon is prevented. SOLUTION: The printing format of a paper 6 on which input printing data 1 are to be printed is set by a format means 3, from the vertical size of the format means 3 setting the printing format of the paper 6 on which the printing format set by the format means 3 is to be printed, the number of line feeds is counted by the width of an ink ribbon, and a fraction as the remainder after division, is detected by a detection means 7. After that, only when a fraction as the remainder after division, is detected, the format means 3 is controlled by a control means 5 for resetting the vertical size of the printing format so that a fraction as the remainder after division of the vertical size of the printing format may not be detected. Therefore, only when the detection means 7 detects an aliquant fraction, the format means 3 is reset and printing is made to the paper 6 by a head 2.
