PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chair which can assure an adequate locking state by slowly backward tilting a backrest in a state of simple assembly. SOLUTION: A supporting shaft 20 is passed through movable plates 17 which move back and forth cooperatively with the tilting of the backrest and friction plates 21 which impart friction resistance to the movement of the movable plates 17. The supporting shaft 20 is mounted at a case 22. The supporting shaft 20 is provided with collars 24 and 25 and a cam 27 for changeover. As a result, the entire part of the resistance imparting means is formed as a unit and, therefore, the mounting to a seat receiving body 2 is simplified and eventually, the efficiency of the assembly work of the chair is improved.
