PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stimulable fluorescent substance which hardly undergoes X-ray damage by employing a stimulable fluorescent substance which gives a specific composition after burning and giving thereto an average particle size before burning D1(μm) and an average particle size after burning (μm) that satisfy a specific relation. SOLUTION: A stimulable fluorescent substance obtained by burning has a composition of formula I and has average particle sizes D1 and D2, before and after burning, respectively, which satisfy the relation of formula II. In formula I, MII is an alkaline earth metal selected from the group consisting of Sr, Ca and Mg; MI is an alkali metal selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs; MIII is a trivalent compound of Al, Ga, In, Tl, Sc, Y, La, Cd or Lu; X is a halogen; Ln is a rare earth element such as Ce, Pr, Sm and the like; A is Al2O3, SiO2 or ZrO2; 0<=a<=0.3; 0<=b<=2; 0<=c<=2; 0<=d<=0.5 and 0<=x<=0.2.
