PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately and easily measure a processing force at the time of press processing. SOLUTION: Pressure oil is charged in a hydraulic chamber 12 for absorbing an overload formed in a slide 3 of a mechanical press 1. Every given initial pressure of the pressure oil, the relationship between the pressure of the pressure oil under the condition that it is pressurized by a processing force at the time of press processing, and the size of the processing force is measured in advance and the measured result is stored in a computer 33 as plural pressurizing characteristics. The computer 33 stores via a pressure sensor 27 the pressure of the pressure oil detected immediately after the slide 3 passes through a top dead center as a preload pressure, and stores the maximum pressure of the pressure oil detected until the slide 3 is positioned at the top dead center again as a peak pressure. Furthermore, the pressurizing characteristic corresponding to the preload pressure is chosen from the plural pressurizing characteristics, and then the processing force at the press processing time is calculated from the chosen pressurizing characteristic and the peak pressure.
