PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alkylidenethiazolidinedione in a high yield by performing a condensation reaction of thiazolidinedione with a carbonyl compound in the presence of an amine, a carbonic acid salt, a bicarbonic acid salt or an acetic acid salt of the amine. SOLUTION: This 5-alkylidenethiazolidene-2,4-dione of formula III is obtained by performing a condensation reaction of (A) a thiazolidene-2,4-dione of formula I with (B) a carbonyl compound of formula II [R1, R2 are each a 1-6C alkyl or a constituting element of a (substituted) 5-8C cycloalkane] in the presence of (C) a condensation agent such as ammonia gas, a primary amine or its carbonic acid salt, bicarbonic acid salt or acetic acid salt (e.g.; ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate), preferably at 20-140 deg.C. In the above reaction, it is preferable to use 1.0-10.0 equivalent component B and 0.1-4.0 fold molar component C based on the component A. The compound of the formula III is useful as a production intermediate of anα-mercaptocarboxylic acid which is an intermediate material of a medicine and an agrochemical.
