PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new type method for producing an ethercarboxylic acid with a low residual alcohol content. SOLUTION: This method for producing an ethercarboxylic acid with a low residual alcohol content, or an alkali metal or ammonium salt of the ethercarboxylic acid, comprises converting at first a monovalent or multivalent alcohol into a corresponding alkoxide by the use of a basic compound in a stoichiometrically short amount of 5-95 mol%, then allowing the formed alkoxide to react with an alkylene oxide and, if necessary, distilling off the residual alcohol remained in the reaction mixture, and further directly alkylating the formed strong alkaline reaction mixture containing an alkoxylated alkoxide in an amount of >=5 mol% with a chloroacetic acid derivative and if necessary, acidifying the alkylated reaction product with a mineral acid to convert into the free ethercarboxylic acid.
