PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pneumatic tire exhibiting satisfactory braking properties both on ice and on a wet road surface as well as improved in steering stability in the initial stage and a rubber composition therefor, and to provide also a pneumatic tire excellent in braking performances on ice and on a wet road surface even after a base rubber is exposed by abrasion of a tread rubber. SOLUTION: There is provided a rubber composition comprising a rubber component, which comprises at least one of natural rubbers and diene-based synthetic rubbers and contains at least 6 wt.% of a polybutadiene having a weight average mol.wt., in terms of polystyrene, of 5,000-30,000 and a cis-1,4- structure content of 60-98%, having incorporated therewith short fibers having an average length of not more than 10 mm. The objective pneumatic tire is obtained by employing this composition for a tread.
