PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thread for preventing counterfeit, having excellent effect for preventing the counterfeit, and further to provide a paper for preventing the counterfeit by using the thread. SOLUTION: This thread 10 for preventing counterfeit is a thread to be used by making a patterned paper with the thread, and has a resin layer 12 having an optical diffraction grating or a hologram pattern 13 formed on a base material 11 composed of a resin film, and a ferromagnetic thin membrane layer 15 attached onto the resin layer 13. The thread can provide the magnetic anisotropy to the magnetic thin membrane layer by forming a ferromagnetic thin membrane layer following the fine ruggedness formed by the optical diffraction grating or the hologram pattern 13, and the optical diffraction grating or the hologram pattern 13 can be the combination of different patterns so that the optical diffraction grating or the hologram pattern 13 may provide the change of magnetic characteristics. The paper for preventing the counterfeit is obtained by making the pattern paper of a base paper with the thread for preventing the counterfeit.
