PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change a gear shift condition of a continuously variable transmission according to a failure condition of a solenoid valve by deciding the gear shift direction according to an abnormal state generating condition of a signal pressure generating means and a pulley ratio of a time point detected by a pulley ratio detecting means, and changing the speed. SOLUTION: A continuously variable transmission has a main control unit, and is connected to a solenoid fail judging unit connected to solenoid valves SLR1, SLR2, a pulley ratio detecting unit, a gear shift direction deciding unit and the like. When it is judged by the solenoid fail judging unit that an abnormal condition is generated in the duty solenoids SLR1, SLR2, a present pulley ratioγis detected by a pulley ratio detecting unit. A gear shift direction deciding map (MAP) is read, and the gear shift direction is decided from the present pulley ratioγaccording to each abnormal state generating condition of the solenoid valves SLR1, SLR2 in which the abnormal condition (failure) occurs, on the basis of the MAP.
