PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance contamination resistance as well as to ensure good blocking performance and sufficient permeated water by disposing a skin layer comprising a composition prepared by allowing a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing specified structural units to react with a polyfunctional amine on a support. SOLUTION: This composite reverse osmosis membrane has a skin layer comprising a composition prepared by allowing a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing structural units of the formula (where X is Cl, Br or I, preferably Cl) to react with a polyfunctional amine and a support for the skin layer. The modified polyvinyl alcohol preferably has a polymerization degree of 1,000-3,000 and 90-99.9 mol% saponification degree. The preferred proportion of the structural units in the polymer is 0.01-90 mol%. The composite reverse osmosis membrane may be formed by disposing a thin film of a polyamide obtained by the interfacial polymerization of a polyfunctional aromatic amine and a carboxylic acid halide modified polyvinyl alcohol on a supporting membrane.
