POLYMERIZABLE SUGAR ESTER AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having functions of rhamnose and fucose and polymerizability based on vinyl group, useful for a polymerizable monomer to obtain its homopolymer and a copolymer. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formulas I or II (R1-R4 are each H or OH and R1/R2 or R3/R4 are interrelating in the way that the one is H then the other is OH and the one is OH then the other is H; X is a 1-12C alkylene), e.g. rhamnose-4-O-vinyl adipate. The compound of formulas I or II is obtained by reacting corresponding rhamnose or fucose and diester of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. divinyl adipate, etc.), in the presence of a hydrolase comprising lipase or protease. A polymer obtained from the compound is useful as a biodegradable polymer and as a functional material used in polymer field and medical field.
