PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for increasing the nematic temperature range of a liquid crystal composition while satisfying various characteristics required for liquid crystal optics, and a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element prepared through this process to improve the above-mentioned disadvantage. SOLUTION: In a process for increasing the liquid crystal temperature range of a nematic liquid crystal composition (B) for a display device containing a liquid crystal compound (A) having a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4- phenylene group, a compound (C) wherein a structure of the formula substitutes for the trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4-phenylene group in the liquid crystal compound (A), totally or partially substitutes for the liquid crystal compound (A) to increase the liquid crystal temperature range of the liquid crystal composition (B).
