PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for external use which is excellent in stability, has a low melting point, has not irritation to the skin and excellent in sense of use by including at least one specificα-hydroxy fatty acid derivative. SOLUTION: This composition is prepared by including about 0.01-60.0 wt.% of at least one kind selected fromα-hydroxy fatty acid derivatives (e.g. 2- palmitoyloxypalmitinic acid ethyl ester, etc.), of the formula (wherein R1 is a 10-24C alkyl; R2 is a 1-31C alkyl; and R3 is a 1-10C alkyl). The compound of the formula is obtained e.g. by reacting 2-hydroxypalmitic acid with ethanol while removing produced water and then by reacting palmitic acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. Theα-hydroxy fatty acid derivative can be used by being formulated in a skin composition such as lotion and emulsion, and a hairdressing composition such as shampoo and rinse.
